"My imagination is just diabolical enough that when that jet fighter appears toward the end, I wish it had appeared, circled back--and opened fire."

    I miss you Roger.

If you buy this movie nowadays it usually comes with an "alternate," or what I can only assume was the original, ending.

It makes a little more sense as a conclusion to the film, and is much better than the somewhat happily-ever-after ending we all know.

And by the way, I liked the third act of the film (especially with the alternate ending). If only because we were gifted with "In the House (In a Heartbeat)", that great big epic song playing throughout the climax.

Yep, I'm pretty dang sure this one is also supposed to be 3 1/2 stars and it sure reads like one. I remember he gave this one 3 1/2 and the sequel, "28 Weeks Later", 3 stars (missing).
Put this under the 3 1/2 to 3 stars recent glitch

first half was so slow and boring, when they met frank and hannah i actually thought something was gonna go down, like it might turn out they were cannibals luring uninfected humans or something.

also that really awkward "lets go shopping" scene.

but the last third of the movie really kicked into high gear. like damn.

That's the difference between this being a sci-fi movie (which it is) and a horror movie (which it really isn't). It builds its world, and then fills it in. The shopping scene is meant to offer a glimpse into a normal life, one where these folks might have interacted had they not suffered this fate.

Cillian Murphy's performance in this was first rate. His metamorphosis from the film's beginning to the end is pretty convincing, and I think Roger overlooks that element.
