phancy.com notes: For a nothingburger of a movie, this was quite entertaining. None of the storylines really add up to anything, but the 80s aesthetic is on point. It looks, feels, and plays like a grimy 80s thriller, and that may actually be the actual point. A character literally points out that movies are all facades with nothing behind them, which is pretty much what Maxine is like as a character, so... that checks out? In any case, if you have a fondness for old horror thrillers on crappy VHS tapes, this is the movie for you. Watching the previous two films is not required for your understanding or additional enjoyment.

Goth remains a singular screen presence, but she can only do so much with a character who becomes less interesting as she finds herself drawn deeper into danger. As the film approaches its conclusion, “MaXXXine” oddly lacks tension and momentum. The revelation of the killer’s identity and motivation only raises more questions than it answers.
